Oogie Boogie Gummies Serving Bag

Here it is, the first tutorial from our The Nightmare Before Christmas Dessert Bar!

Remember Oogie Boogie? The busting-at-the-seams bad guy from The Nightmare Before Christmas who kidnaps Santa? He looks like a cross between a burlap sack and a voodoo doll. His character is always busting his stitches and dripping out the bugs and worms inside.

So I figured Oogie Boogie was a natural fit for serving up a plate of gummy worms and sour cherry gummies. It’s easy, just grab a brown paper bag from the grocery store (it’s best if at least one side is blank and not printed), some thick black or brown yarn, scissors, a paper hole punch and a safety pin.

First, cut the brown bag in half, keeping the bottom half of the bag.

Next, open up the bag and punch a bunch of holes around the edges, circling all the way around. I made my holes around 1 inch apart,  but I left some big gaps in the line of holes. You’ll see why later.

To thread the yarn though these holes, you could use your fingers. I used a safety pin. Just bend it open, tie the yarn to the loop and wrap some excess around the bottom half.

Either way, you’re going to want to sew through your holes with a blanket stitch.

Want to know why I skipped and left some room while I was punching my holes? So that I could get a good coming-apart-at-the-seams look, as if the real Oogie Boogie was splitting open to feed us his gummy insides.

Gross? Yeah. But everybody loves it (especially kids).

Crunch the bag up so it stays propped open to stash your gummies inside. I placed my Oogie Boogie bag on top of a serving plate, then dumped a pile of gummy worms and sour cherry gummies on the plate, half-inside the bag.

Top it off with a themed label. Easy, right? And it really is a hit at the party. Dig in!
